What Are Hospital-Grade Pulse Oximeters?

A pulse-oximeter is a special type of oximeter. An oximeter is a device that measures the amount of saturated haemoglobin in blood. An oximeter uses blood that has been removed from a patient and placed into a measuring cell where its oxygen content is accurately measured. To avoid such an invasive procedure, a pulse-oximeter uses the different optical absorption characteristics of oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood and the pulse difference between to arterial and venous blood to generate an accurate reading.  A Pulse Oximeter uses two wavelengths of light, typically at 660nm (red) and 950nm (infrared) to determine the oxygen saturation of arterial blood.

There are some Pulse Oximeters intended for home healthcare puroposes that accurately read oxygen levels, pulse rate and pulse strength but have limited additional functionality.  Hospital-grade Pulse oximeters typically have many other functions and have the type of data-tracking/transmission capabilities required in a hospital setting.  In general, you will find that hospital-grade Pulse Oximeters offer greater measurement accuracy, network connectivity/wireless connectivety options, are more durable (they will last a lot longer than the cheaper-made home care models)

The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the models of Pulse Oximeters that are often bought “used” by medical facilities and private practices that seek the level of functionality available in a Hospital-grade Pulse Oximeter.  Buying used/refurbished Pulse Oximeters enables these medical facilities/private practices to get that functionality within their budgets.

Masimo Rad-8 Tabletop Spo2 Monitor

Rad-8 pulse oximeter in Florida

The Masimo Rad-8 Oximeter is a great example of the type of hospital-grade oximeter that offers a lot more functionality than the homecare versions.  But it was also designed to act as a homecare version so it’s very versatile.  This professional pulse oximeter from Masimo allows you to monitor blood oxygen levels in the hospital, doctor’s office or the comfort of the patient’s home. The Home Mode feature allows for safe and accurate monitoring and trending while at home, and this pulse ox machine has RadNet and RadLink interface capability for multi-patient remote monitoring. In addition to the SIQ bar, FastSat, Alarm Status Indicator and PI found on the Rad-5 Oximeter, the Rad-8 is equipped with Adaptive Probe Off Detection, which offers the best probe off detection of Masimo’s three sensitivity modes. Sensor must be purchased separately.

Additional features such as a 2-second averaging in sleep mode, 72 hours of trending memory, and nurse call interface make this machine one of the best blood oxygen meters on the market.
